What goes up, must come down… which sounds like the fun part to a runner, right? Surely, a race course with an overall elevation loss is tempting for scoring that Boston qualifying time or setting a PR. Read further ->

These events boast plenty of elevation loss, faster than average times, and usually some fantastic views along the way to that finish tape.

The Boston Marathon excitement may be fading since last week’s race, but if it’s left you eager to get out there and experience the race’s unbelievable energy, it’s time to start looking for that qualifier before September. For 2026, qualifying times have been lowered by 5 minutes across most age groups. A course with overall elevation loss might be a tempting way to squeeze out that faster finish but be sure to give those downhills the respect they deserve to avoid soreness or injury, while maximizing their benefits.
