While taking a couple days off after a mountain vacay logging some solid miles, I’ve spent my evenings nerding out on running shoe review videos because, like everything in life, there is always that wonder about whether something better is out there. I’m definitely pleased with my latest addition of the La Sportiva Prodigio Pro to my shoe line-up, which is all the rage with just about everyone. But, honestly, it makes me wonder what revolutionary options other brands have come up with. Go ahead and dedicate some screen time to some of these fascinating and seductive YouTube videos.

How to Tie Running Shoes: Lacing Techniques
Love that new shoe you finally decided on - mostly - but there’s just something not quite right? Minor rubs and pressure hot-spots can often be fixed with a creative lacing technique. Personally, I usually experience lots of slipping around the heel and using those last two eyelets always help snug it up. Check out some other common issues and easy fixes with these tips.
Learning to Rest
As mentioned, I forced myself to take some extra downtime when we returned from several days of lots of uphill trail running last week, along with lots of driving. Maybe some people actually welcome days of inactivity - but I suspect most of us fall into that borderline-obsessive category of runners, cyclists, swimmers who find the spare time vexing - and perhaps try to fill it with busyness like cleaning or yard work. Enthusiastic adventurer/writer, Brandon Leonard, known for his longstanding site, Semi-Rad, ponders the discomfort we face when a “break” becomes a necessity. He notes that “...many of us will take a vacation, but suck at actually being present on said vacation… and arriving at the end of our vacation having not really ever disconnected at all.” Can you relate?
Discovering REDS as a Recreational Runner
It’s hard to avoid warnings these days about the consequences of under fueling our activity, whether it’s intentional or not. Often it seems the stories are focused around young females with high hopes of getting that scholarship or turning pro after graduation, but the reality is that anyone participating in sport can be subject to Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). “Whether it’s diet culture, chasing performance, or just not knowing enough about fueling and rest, there are so many ways people can slide into low energy availability without realizing.” Please note that this article describes restrictive behaviors, as well as some body image discussion.
